The Gobaro group is made up of professional fencers, who have been involved with this profession for over 20 years. They have been in groups with many years of tradition, all of which were founded in the 60’s and were among the top in this genre - historical fencing (the groups Romantik, Dominik and also Kadeti, Rebels, Burdyri, Santelli). They still put their acquired expertise, experience and professional skills into practice under a new name GOBARO - Historical fencing Prague.

The ensemble preforms fencing, duels and fights from the past and are deeply steeped in history. This presents a romantic and exciting show for the contemporary spectator. For the members of the Gobaro group it means hundreds of hours of training and detailed studies of period materials, dealing with the fencing styles and fights in particular historical periods. A well-informed attitude to the complicated fencing problem is supported also by the members’ experience in the sporting tiltyards, where some members reached the highest achievements in this field. The result is an exciting stylized fencing and fight reconstruction, which is valued by both laymen and experts at home and abroad.

The repertoire of the Gobaro group is very extensive. They perform fights from the late gothic period, from 15th century, when the sword was the king of weapons. The knight duels are performed also with axes, shields, lances and halberds. Tournaments with knights on horses are also part of the repertoire.

The period which is performed the most frequently, however, is the end of the Renaissance and mainly the beginning of Baroque, i.e. the first half of 17th century - the period of Dumas’ musketeers. Here, tucks, rapiers, daggers, bowie knives etc. are mainly used.

The next part of the repertoire represents Rococo in the first half of 18th century. The main weapons of the cavaliers of that time were the light dagger and the sabre.

In addition to the above mentioned periods the group has performed many others: from the times of the barbarians through the pirates’ fights to the western shows from the times of the Wild west, where except for shooting and fist fights, the integral part of the performance is a horse, as it is in the whole history anyway.

All the fights are performed with the exact copies of the period weapons (including shooting weapons), which are masterpieces of a private artistic craftsman. The period costumes are also copies of the fashion of that time. The knights’ armour represents precise work as well.

During the period of their performances the group’s members have found many outlets for promoting their work, e.g. frequent cooperation with television in different programmes, shows and films, both at home and abroad. (Serial Arabela; Queen, let the stork come flying; Berenika, Televize –Derby, Gogo show; the performance in Italian television Rai Uno etc.) We can’t omit many years’ cooperation with the foremost Prague theatres, where they helped with the realization of historical plays and choreographical preparations of fighting scenes. In the recent years it was mainly The Theatre on the Railings (Don Juan), The Vinohrady Theatre (Cyrano de Bergerac), The ABC Theatre (The three musketeers; D’Artagnan; Cyrano de Bergerac; D’Artagnan’s daughter), The Bridge Theatre (Fanfan Tulip) and abroad e.g. Low Austrian Theater Summer in Baden (Cyrano de Bergerac; Romeo and Juliet) and The Little Comedy Amsterdam Theatre (Don Juan).

The members of the group also took part in various film shootings. In home production e.g. The Beauty and The Beast, The 9th Heart, Lotranodo and Zubejda and The Lake’s virgin should be mentioned. The foreign production include an Austrian serial “The War of the Oxen”, King Arthur (USA), The Cave of the Golden Rose (Italy), Pardaillan (France), The Dance for God (Germany), My Giant (USA), The Young Indiana Jones (USA), The Snow White in a black Forest (USA), Radecky’s March (Germany), Yenkee from Connecticut in the yard of King Arthur (Canada), Joan d‘Arc (France, Canada), The knight‘s tale (USA), The Mists of Avalon (USA) etc.

The group has toured many countries: Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Germany. A part of the group’s activities is its work in European amusement parks - Fabilandia Rimini (Italy), Zygopark Nice (France), Schloss Thurn (Germany), No Name City (Germany).

The Gobaro group also performs at the castles, chateaux and other places as an attractive part of cultural programmes, at important parties and it takes part in colourful city celebrations, too (the last time: Rudolf II’s celebration in Prague). By no means a small contribution is the share in the programmes of great European knight tournaments - e.g. German Kaltenberg or the marvellous attraction Drachenstich in Furt im Wald. The participation in the theatre festival in Grenoble with the romantic action theatre The Black Mask of French production was a succes as well. The performance of our fencers has become part of the Munich Krone Circus programme, too.

The Gobaro also performs their own theatre units, which are a substantial part of their foreign tours.
